Cloud storage service Dropbox is beta testing a new collaborative note-taking app tentatively called ‘Project Composer‘, which will combine calendar information and Dropbox files when creating notes.
According to Fortune, Composer was first spotted on Product Hunt which is an online bulletin board for tech products. Dropbox has currently shut down access to Composer. It is an online notepad which looks similar to Google Docs and lets you create and edit documents allowing group editing as well, said one person who was able to access Composer for a limited time, before it was taken down by Dropbox. It also syncs with your calendar.
Maggie Bigness, a Product Hunt user said that Composer has beautiful typography and a clean interface. “It allows multiple people to work on a note. You can add tasks, images, dropbox files, tables all in line with your notes. It also prompts you to create a note for a meeting based on what’s on your calendar,” she said.
According to Mashable, former Hackpad team (a company that was acquired by Dropbox last year) should be behind Composer as the users who got early access to Composer were former Hackpad users.
With Composer, it looks like Dropbox is trying to compete with Google Docs, Evernote as well as file storage app Box which has a product called Notes for collaborating on documents.
Dropbox has also recently acquired CloudOn, a startup which helps to make Microsoft Office documents accessible on mobile devices. Last year, Dropbox also announced Project Harmony which allows real-time collaboration on Microsoft Office documents which are saved in Dropbox.
