Facebook Riff helps you make collaborative videos with your friends

Facebook has announced a collaborative video app called Riff that allows you to make a video about any topic and your friends can add their own clips. Facebook Riff is available for both Android and iOS platforms.
Users can make a 20 second video with any topic like 'Happy Birthday' or 'April Fools Day' and your friends can view it and then choose to add their own 20 second clips on that topic. As soon as your friends add their clips to your video, your friends' friends will be able to see and contribute video clips as well. Facebook lets the creator monitor the clips so they can delete individual clips or report a whole video if it's going off-track. Riff videos can be shared on Facebook, other social networking sites as well as on the web.

Riff app was inspired by the ALS Ice Bucket challenge, which saw millions of Facebookers posting videos of themselves dumping ice cold water on themselves for charity. The videos were collaborative in nature as users had to be tagged to take the challenge and donate to ALS research and/or get drenched. Facebook saw 50 percent growth in video views from May to July 2014 during the ice bucket challenge.

A few of Facebook employees took up the idea as an experimental project. Facebook’s Riff Product Manager Josh Miller says “The potential pool of creative collaborators can grow exponentially from there, so a short video can become an inventive project between circles of friends you can share to Facebook or anywhere on the Internet." He adds, “Mostly, this was an experimental side project for the team that turned out to be really fun.”
